There are various types of prayers that can be prayed when you are in need of a job or a new job. Each prayer has a slightly different motivation, need, or circumstance. The following prayers will guide you to ask for God’s provision, live with wisdom, and trust God in the process.
You can also ask God for specifics as it pertains to your situation. God hears your prayers. I recommend keeping a prayer journal so that you can refer back to it to see if and when those prayers have been answered. I have done this in my own life and can testify of dozens of pages of prayers being answered.
The Power of Prayer
Prayer is powerful. Not only is it a significant part of scripture, but it was also a significant part of Jesus’ life while He was here on earth. James 5:16 exclaims, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
There is no doubt that prayer is powerful. The power of prayer comes from the One in whom You pray. The power does not come through yourself, your words, or even the prayer itself. It is helpful to pray specifically so that you attest answered prayers directly to God and not coincidence. To build your faith, ask faithful believers the ways that God has been faithful and how He has responded to their prayers.
Prayers of Provision
Lord God, I pray that You would bring provision into my life. I thank You for all that I have had throughout my life. I thank You for Your faithfulness and for the ways You have continued to care for me.
In this season Lord, I ask for You to make a way where there seems like there is no way. Partner with me and lead me in this process of finding a job, building a resume, applying, and interviewing. Give me grace and empower me to stand against temptation and sin. Lead me to a place of victory through the power of Your Spirit and not my own strength.
Provide for all my needs so that I can provide for the needs of others and proclaim Your glory. Please, provide the transportation needed, the attire I must wear at the job, the food I must eat, and the place I must live. If there is anything lacking in my qualifications, teach me new skills. Give me the humility to work at whatever job you provide, even if it isn’t my first choice.
In all ways, help me to be a servant to You and those around me that I may spread Your love and truth.
Prayers of Trust
Father, I trust You because Your Word is true. Throughout scripture, I see Your faithfulness. Before there was even sin, You predestined that Jesus would make restitution and bring complete redemption. Then, in the Old Testament, we see the prophetic words You spoke through Your prophets. None of these have failed.
They have been completed through the life of Jesus and are continuing to be completed today. You have never gone back on Your promise. Your faithfulness endures forever, as does Your love. There is no end to Your goodness.
I have witnessed Your work in my own life. Remind me of all the ways You have worked, especially the areas that I have forgotten. Additionally, I have seen Your work in the world around me. Bring others into my life to share their testimonies and build my faith.
Help me to continue to grow in trust. Remind me to take all my cares and worries to You as soon as they surface. Do not let me sit in a pit but pull me out by the strength of Your hand. Bring truth to any lies I am believing about You, life, others, and my self. Within every once of my being, bring transformation.
Prayers of Connections and Network
God, all resources are Yours. I surrender my life into Your hands. I ask that You would use me as You see fit. Please bring others into my life with whom I can partner with in the work of Your Kingdom. Help my next job to be more than a way to make money.
Make it a place where Your gospel, truth, and hope is preached. Build connections with individuals to bring this to fruition. Use the connections in my life that I currently have. If there are any people I need to contact, make it known. If there are any people who are supposed to contact me, lead them to do so.
Please build a network of people who will fight against the darkness and injustice in this world. Give us the power and strength to stand against evil and sin and bring about the goodness of Your Kingdom. Allow the workplace to be a location where this occurs.
Use the relationships that we form to do these things. Cultivate a setting where Your name is esteemed and where we can freely and boldly live for You. Through these connections and network, provide a way that I, and others that are in need of work, can have an opportunity to provide for these needs.
Create a pure heart in me. Bless the work of my hands so that I can give generously to Your people and purposes. Rid me of greed so that when I have a job, I am not tempted to use my money unrighteously. In all things, let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done.
Prayers of Wisdom & Direction
Lord, You exclaim in Proverbs that wisdom cries out in the streets for those who will hear. In James 1:5 Your Holy Spirit spoke, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
I am asking for wisdom and I trust that you will indeed grant me wisdom according to your promise. Give me the wisdom to know what job to pursue. Give me the wisdom to maintain the job and build healthy relations.
Direct me in the way that I should go and I will follow. Show me the practical steps to take. Help me with all the details no matter how big or small they may be. My desire is to serve You. Show the ways in which I can do this.
Teach me when to wait and trust You and teach me when to take up my mat and walk. Bring me the balance and truth that I need so that I do not fall to any extremes.
Scripture to Pray
Scripture gives intensive points to pray about concerning finance and provision. It leads us to truth and correction when we are holding onto finances in a harmful way. Additionally, it leads us to the peace that comes from God’s truth. You can pray any scripture word for word, or you can adapt it to pertain to your personal situation.
Furthermore, by studying scripture, you can glean from the overall principles of the passage. You can apply these principles to your circumstances and life.
“Seek First the Kingdom” (Matthew 6:25-33)
Lord, you have said in your word not to worry about tomorrow but to seek first Your Kingdom. Therefore, I rest in your word that says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:25-33).
I choose to trust You and rest in Your promise that all these things will be added. I choose to focus on Your Kingdom and not my worries. Also, I choose to pursue Your Kingdom and righteousness more than my fear causes me to pursue a job.
“Give Us Today, Daily Bread” (Matthew 6:11)
Father in heaven, You explained how to pray and in that prayer, You told us to ask for our daily bread. Your word says, “Give us today our daily bread”(Matthew 6:11). Today, I ask You to provide my needs for today as well as the needs of my family. Provide the food that we need in addition to the shelter and other physical needs we have.
Also, please provide for us spiritually and relationally. Let love abound in all areas of our life. Lord, I ask that You would provide a steady job that I can work to bring the daily bread. If You have other means to do this, I trust You.
Yet, I also know the command to work hard and do all things as if I’m working for You and not for men. If You are willing, bring me a job so that I can do this. Provide for my needs and strengthen my hands to do the work that You are calling me to.
“Work” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)
God, in Your word you commanded a group of people to live a quiet life and to work with their hands. You advised them to work and not be dependent on others. While I know this applied to a specific circumstance and group of people, I have the desire to support myself and be able to support those in need.
According to Your will and good purpose, lead me to a job so that I may follow the principle of 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, “to make it [my] ambition to lead a quiet life: [to] mind [my] own business and work with [my] hands, so that [my] daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that [I] will not be dependent on anybody” (changes added to make prayer personal).
Nevertheless, give me the humility to receive from others in my time of need if that is Your will. Lead me where I must go and reveal to me the steps I must take.
“Unless the Lord Builds” (Psalm 127:1-2)
Your word states, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for He grants sleep to those He loves” (Psalm 127:1-2).
Lord, be the one to build my house. Be the one to watch over my life. Do not allow me to labor in vain and labor for selfish reasons. Lead me in the everlasting way in this life. Show me how to live in a way with eternity values in mind. Grant me rest and sleep that I may not toil for food to eat or for daily provisions.
“Search My Heart” (Psalm 139:23-24)
Lord, lead me not in striving or greed. Reveal the contents of my heart and change whatever needs to be changed. In the areas that I am selfish and greedy, cultivate a compassionate and generous heart and attitude. Help me to steward my finances for Your glory and not my own.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). Lead me in the direction that I need to go concerning a job or career. Close any doors that are not for me and open the doors that are.
Thank You for Your continued goodness. Thank You for giving me Your word to be strengthened and encouraged by. I praise You for all Your works. I trust You to lead me into the next season of life.
“Serve God, Not Money” (Matthew 6:24)
Lord, I come to you and pray for a job opportunity. I ask that You would show me where to apply and that You would give me favor with the employer. Additionally, I ask that You would grow my love for You and not my love for money.
My natural reaction is to worry and become anxious about needing finances and a steady job. Through this process, protect me from the love of money and the fear of not having money. Do not allow this area of life to control or overwhelm me.
In Matthew 6:24 You declare, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Show me how to be wise with my finances and use them in a way that honors You. Teach me how to be generous. Lord, help me understand that all resources are Yours. Give me the strength and trust that I need to value You and steward the opportunities You have given me. Give me a new perspective about finances that is aligned with Your goodness, peace, will, and purpose.
“Plans for a Hope and Future” (Jeremiah 29:11)
God, In Jeremiah 29:11 You explained to the Israelites, “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Your plans for the nation of Israel were always good.
In the New Testament, you expand Your Kingdom’s invitation to Gentiles as well as Jews. Your plans for the world are good. Your plans for me are good as well. I trust that You have good plans for my life. Further, I believe and trust that You do have plans to prosper me and not to harm me. Your desire is for my hope and future because You are good and You are love.
How You will make this come to pass, I am uncertain. However, throughout all circumstances, I choose to believe that You will work all the struggles and evil for my good and the good of this world. You can take my fears about the uncertainty of this job, and use it for good.
You can take this season of life that is hard and cultivate goodness within me. Help me to see all that You are doing in this season. Show me the ways that You have been advocating for me. Reveal Your work that I may praise You and thank You specifically.
