One of the things that Christians are known for is their regular church attendance. There are some very convincing reasons why attending church is so important and beneficial in the Christian life.
Why do Christians go to church? Christians go to church because it is apart of God’s plan (Matt. 16:18). The church helps Christians grow in community, knowledge, and wisdom of God and His word. Since the church is the body of Christ, all believers are called to be apart.
To start, let’s look at the defintion of the church.
4 Biblical Reasons Christians Go To Church
The church is the body of Christ. Everyone who believes in Jesus, is apart of the church.
Here are four reasons Christians should go to church.
1. Church Community
The community that is at church is something that will be there to encourage and support you. God can work in amazing ways in our life through the community we find at church.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25
Going to church on Sunday, or any day of the week gives you a chance to connect with like-minded believers. It is a time to join together and hear how God is working in the different lives of believers.
As said in Hebrews 10:24, we get to stir each other on “to love and good works.” In scripture, we are commanded to love our neighbor and care for the orphans and widows, and the church is exactly who will encourage you and others to live out God’s word.
Being with other Christians is a time to grow together as the body of Christ, but also grow closer to God.
Not only do we get to encourage each other, but also help bear each other’s burden as well and keep each other accountable.
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
We should be in a Christian community to help us in our walk with Christ, we are created for relationships, and the church community is such a blessing.
Church attendance is as vital to a disciple as a transfusion of rich, healthy blood to a sick man.
Dwight L. Moody
2. Teaching
Scripture can sometimes be complicated, or hard to understand, thankfully the church is there to help. When attending a church you are sure to hear a pastor speak, and what they say is to encourage and help you gain wisdom.
As Christians, we are called to live out and present the good news of the gospel throughout our lives.
We want to be able to understand scripture and apply it to our lives. As Christians, we should strive to understand the Bible, and this starts with learning from those more knowledgeable like your pastor.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
Your pastor is equipping you to be able to articulate God’s word for both your own life and so you can articulate it to others.
We want to handle the word of God in a way that is true, and understandable as we go into our homes and communities being a light for the gospel.
3. Serving
The primary mission of the church is to share the gospel with the whole world, and your local congregation is a big part of that. Reaching the whole world starts with your community, and that can start with you and everyone else in your church.
Going to church means that you have an opportunity to serve and exemplify God’s word in your community.
You can serve in many different ways within your local church and all can have an impact on the Kingdom of God.
You can read more about how you can serve at your local church by reading Volunteering at Your Local Church: Categories and How to Start.
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
1 Peter 4:10
When serving with your local church you may be helping those within the family of faith while watching their kids, or you may be exemplifying God’s love during an outreach event to those who have never hear the good news of the gospel.
Being a part of the church and attending means being a part of the Great Commission.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19,20
4. Worship
It is amazing to be able to come to the house of the Lord to worship Him, and with so many others who have seen his goodness.
Worship is such a key part of church services and should be a big motivation to come to church. Not only do we get to enjoy being in the presence of God, but God deserves our worship.
We should be praising God all week, but praising with other believers makes the time even more beautiful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16
Worship is about our heart of thankfulness to God, although it can be an amazing experience, we should remember that we are coming with hearts of thankfulness with other believers to worship God.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 100:4,5
If you read through Psalms you will find many verses that express praise to God. God can work in mighty ways when we worship as a church together, and it prepares our hearts to hear what God has to say in the sermon.
Importance of Church
Attending church regularly can bring so many blessings to our life as you create community and increase in knowledge. It can be hard sometimes to fit it into your schedule, but important enough to set time aside to join with other believers every week.
Not everyone has the same church experience, and picking the right church can be a big part of that. As humans, we are fallen, and that means there can be times and places where sin has corrupted fellowship.
God is sanctifying everyone in the church, and while even pastors can sin, we know that God is working to grow them like he is growing us.
Think about the example you are setting to those around you. When you attend church others will see it, and it can be an opportunity for you to invite others to attend as well.
Going to church can be a domino effect, in a good way, in your life, and in others, God is working in an amazing way in you and your church.
The True Church can never fail. For it is based upon a rock.
T.S. Eliot
