Do you love dressing up for Halloween, but not sure of how to do it in a way that glorifies God? Are tired of all of the ” predictable” Christian Halloween costumes and want some new and unique? Well, then this is the list for you, my friend.
What are Christian Halloween costumes? Christian Halloween costumes are costumes that are appropriate for Christians to wear so that they can celebrate Halloween in a way that is pleasing to God.
Whether you are looking for costume ideas for you, your kiddos, or even your dog this post will help you find the costume that works best for you for this fall season.
1) Moses And The Ten Commandments
Depending on how you feel about dressing up as a Bible character this costume may or may not be for you.
There are a few different ways to pull this off.
- By yourself and you could just hold the ten commandments
- Couples costume: One of you could be Moses and the other could be the ten commandments.
- Family costume: If you want to get your whole family involved have one person dress up as Moses, and the rest dress up as 1-2 commandments depending on the size of your family.
Materials needed: tan dress, robe, sandals, and beard for Moses. Depending on if you are doing this by yourself or with someone else you could either use grey foam for the ten commandments, or grey shirts.
2) Bob Ross
If you don’t know who Bob Ross is, he is a painter who had a show from 1983-1994 and is known for being incredibly peaceful and positive.
You could go as Bob Ross by yourself or make it a couple’s costume by having your friend go as his painting.
Materials needed: Curly short hair wig, a button-down shirt, a paintbrush, and a paint palette. For the Canvas, you could do a white dress with a painting on it, or tape two white poster boards on your shirt to make the canvas.
3) Larry Boy
If you really want a costume that is going to stand out from everyone else then this one is for you.
Larry Boy is the fun loving, plunger using superhero from Veggie Tales.
Materials needed: plungers, a hat/headband, a purple mask, a yellow shirt, and purple leggings/jeans.
The most difficult part of this costume is pulling off the plunger hat, you can get kid-sized plungers from the dollar tree and remove the black part of the plunger to glue to a hat/ headband.
4) Sheep and Shepherd
Whether you want to be one of the shepherds who were in the fields when Jesus was born or just an excuse to hold a staff this a fun way to incorporate the Bible into your evening.
Shepherd: a long plain dress, Robe, head covering, sandals, and a stick to use as a staff.
Sheep: white t-shirt and glue some pillow stuffing on it paired with black gloves, black pants, black shoes, and black felt glued onto a headband for ears.
5) A Character From Hamilton
Ever since Hamilton was released on Disney Plus in July it has skyrocketed in popularity, so it should for sure be a win at any costume party this year.
Though you could choose any character from Hamilton (Including one of the background dancers). My top three recommendations would be Eliza, George Washington, or Thomas Jefferson so that way you can stand out from all of the Alexander’s.
Eliza: For Eliza, you could try to find a dress that looks like any of the ones she wore in the musical, but I recommend a blue ball gown and hot gluing lace to the top to like the dress she wore the most. After finding that dress put your hair halfway up and throw on some flats and you are good to go.
George Washington: To go as George Washington all you really need is a white button-down shirt with some fluff on top, a black or tan vest, and black or tan pants. To add some extra fun in your costume you could also try to find a George Washington wig.
Thomas Jefferson: To go as Thomas Jefferson you would also need a white button-down shirt with some fluff on top, a purple vest, some purple pants, and for something extra make a sign that says “What did I miss?”
6) Mario Characters
Almost everyone has played or been exposed to Mario at some point, so these costumes have been trendy in the past few years.
Though there are so many Mario Characters you can choose from. I would suggest going as Mario, Luigi, or Princess Peach.
Mario/ Luigi: For Mario is a red hat, shirt, overalls or blue jeans with suspenders, black shoes, and of course a fake mustache. Once you’ve found all of these all you will need to do is write an M on the hat for a finishing touch. For Luigi, you will need all the same materials just a green shirt and hat with an M on it.
Princess Peach: For Princess Peach, you will need either a pink shirt and tutu or a dress, white gloves, heels, and either or homemade crown or dollar store tiara.
7) Chronicles Of Narnia Characters
The Chronicles of Narnia is a fantastic Christian book series by C.S. Lewis and has so many amazing different characters that you could dress as. Here are three ideas I have: Aslan, the white witch, and Mr. Tumnus.
Aslan: find a lion costume or try doing it DIYing it by getting a lions mane, light brown leggings and t-shirt, and a lion’s tale.
The white witch: a white dress, fake fur shawl, and a tiara. If you want to feel more powerful you can also add in a scepter.
Mr. Tumnus: you’ll need fluffy/ velvet brown leggings for the fur effect, a skin-colored shirt, red scarf, black shoes, and tiny horns.
9) Superheros
Superheroes are always a fun option when looking at Halloween costumes, and they make you feel pretty cool. When choosing which superheroes to be I recommend staying away from any of the ones that use magic to ensure you aren’t representing anything that does not bring glory to God.
Batman: for this costume, you can either go all out by buying all the gadgets and costumes, or you could get a batman t-shirt, black pants, mask, and maybe even a Batarang to simplify it.
Wonderwoman: I recommend getting the costume because DIYing it is a little more difficult. To DIY it you could try making a redshirt with a golden W on it, a blue tutu with added stars, and make her crown by using duct tape.
Spiderman: (by far the best superhero of all time in my opinion.) Since Spiderman’s homecoming came out this costume is a little easier to DIY. You just need a cut red hoodie, blue long sleeve, blue jeans, a red mask, goggles, and the spiderman iron-on logo.
10) Dress As Your Pastor
Imagine going to your harvest party, and when your pastor looks at you he thinks he’s looking in the mirror. Hilarious right? I think so.
To put this together you just need to find an outfit your pastor would wear and any misc. items he wears. To make it even better pay attention to how they speak and try to sound like them.
11) The Great Pumpkin
Watching Charlie Brown for each holiday season has always been a tradition in my family, and I love the Halloween special with all of the classic peanuts characters.
Charlie Brown: a yellow shirt with some felt or drawn zigzags, black shorts, yellow socks, and brown shoes.
Linus: a red and black striped shirt, black shorts, a blue blanket, and for an extra Halloween touch make a sign that says “Welcome great pumpkin.”
Lucy: For Lucy, you will need a blue dress, blue socks, white dress shoes, and a side of sass to really pull this costume off. You could also go a little extra and carry a football around with you.
Time to get your tape, scissors, and start making those DIY halloween costumes!
