The Bible is full of encouragement, but sometimes it is hard to find those amazing verses that hit close to home and help you. Below are sixty verses that will help encourage and inspire you.
What’s a bible verse about encouragement? Throughout the Bible we find many verses and stories that encourage us in our walk with Christ, including verses like Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Reading the Bible will bring you much encouragement. Some stories and passages will strengthen and inspire us. Sixty verses are just a fraction of what the Lord can speak to you through scripture. All verses are in the English Standard Version.
1. Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
Even when things are uncertain, we know that God is in control, and we can take comfort in that. We can be still knowing God will be exalted on the earth.
2. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
We are encouraged throughout scripture, but in 1 Thessalonians we are also reminded to encourage others and build each other up.
3. Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
God is commanding Joshua here to be strong and courageous as he is leading the Israelites into the promised land. God is with us today, which gives us the confidence to be strong in the Lord.
4. 2 Corinthians 12:10
For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Even though we face hardships regularly in our life, we have confidence in Christ that even when we are not strong enough, God is working in us, and giving us strength.
5. Lamentations 3:22-23
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
God’s love and mercy for us never ends. Every morning we can get up knowing that God is faithful and is working for our good.
6. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
God will make our paths straight, but we need to trust in him and what he is doing in our lives. When we think we know what is best and lean on our own understanding we get lead astray, we need to acknowledge God in everything because he is working for our good.
7. Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you, he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
The Lord will sustain us, and when we are stressed out and worried we can cast that burden on him. He is working for our good.
8. Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
When thinking of a strong tower, it is a place of protection, it is what God is to those who believe in him. We can run to him and we will be safe from the storms of life around us.
9. Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
We walk through hard times in our life, but we can have confidence that God is with us. We do not need to fear because God is with us, we are comforted by the presence of God and his word.
10. Isaiah 40:31
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
When we wait on the Lord in our lives, we are told in Isaiah, that we will have strength and will not grow weary. God is strengthening us when we trust in him for our strength.
11. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
We can trust in God and when we trust in God we have no reason to be afraid. In this verse God says He will strengthen and help us, he will uphold us. We can know we are safe when we are held by the hands of the Father.
12. Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
God was talking to the Israelites in this passage, but the same is true for us today. God is with us in powerful ways. Going through life we will face hardships, it will not be easy but God is with us and he works in powerful ways.
13. Matthew 11:28-30
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
This verse is so comforting knowing that God will give us rest. Life can be hard, but Jesus says we will find rest for our souls when we come to Jesus. He is gentle and lowly of heart and will help us bear our burdens.
14. John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
We cannot escape the hardships and trials in life, but we can have peace anyway. We can have peace because Jesus has the victory and we can have confidence in that even if everything else is going wrong.
15. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
We see many times in scripture to give our burdens to God, and this is because he really cares for us, and really loves us. We can give our worries up to God because he loves and cares for us.
16. Psalm 121:7-8
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
God is for us and he is protecting us. When we wake up in the morning we can be thankful that God is with us and is going with us wherever we go, and not only for today, but forevermore.
17. Philippians 4:12-13
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Our contentment in life is not based on whether we have a lot of stuff or are comfy, but in fact, we can be content in any situation. In Christ and only in Christ, we can face the many trials of life and be content.
18. Psalm 34:4
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
The Lord is with us always, but we also need to remember to seek him in all we do. When we seek him he will answer, it is such a comfort to know that God is listening.
19. Proverbs 30:5
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
We are protected when we take refuge in God. He shields us, and we know this is true because the word of God is true.
20. Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
When the Israelites were in exile in the Old Testament it was hard for them to understand God’s will for their lives. God told them that he has a plan for them and they are plans to give them hope and a future. It was true for them when the Israelites were in exile, and today it is also true as we go through life. God knows our future, and his plans are for us are good.
21. 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.
The world around us is broken and falling apart, but we do not have to be focused on the brokenness around us, but we can know that there is a time coming where we will be free from pain and sadness if we trust in Jesus. Even when our bodies are deteriorating we know that we are growing spiritually closer to Christ.
22. Romans 15:4
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
All throughout scriptures, we are given instruction but we are also given hope. Again and again, we hear of the hope God brings to his people, and because of it, we are encouraged through scripture.
23. Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
God spoke this to Israel after Moses had died and Joshua took over to take the people to the promised land. Understandably the people were afraid, but God told them to not be afraid of their enemies because the Lord was guiding them like we see him do today in our lives.
24. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
This verse distinctly lets us know that the peace we have in this world is not like any other. The world’s peace does not satisfy like the peace we have from God. Having this peace, we have no reason to be troubled or afraid.
25. Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
God is actively working in our lives for the good. Like we see in scripture over and over again we are reminded that God does not just call us to his kingdom, but he also leads us and works in our lives.
26. Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
It is through prayer and supplications that we can let our request be known to God and give our anxiety to him. We are then promised peace, a peace from God that is unlike the world’s peace.
27. Philippians 1:6
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
God is working on us, and sometimes it can feel like we are stuck or don’t seem to be going anywhere, but we know that God is still working on us. God will complete the work he has started in us.
28. Hebrews 6:18
So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
The hope of God and all he is and all he has done brings us much encouragement on our walk with Christ. We can be encouraged throughout scripture and today knowing that God cannot lie and is fulfilling his promises to us.
29. John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
We are broken people in need of saving. God loved the world so much that he sent his son, not to simply condemn us for all of our sins, but to save us.
30. 1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
When we are facing temptations that seem overwhelming, we can be confident in the fact that in our temptations God provides a way out. Because of our faith in God, we will be able to endure any temptation.
31. Psalm 31:24
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!
This verse lets us know that as we wait on the Lord we have confidence in the Lord so we can take courage. God is working even when we do not see it.
32. Romans 8:31
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
God is working for us as Christians, and God is the creator of the world and everything in it and has the victory, so what is it that we have to be afraid of? God will be victorious over anyone against us.
33. 1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
In this verse, we are encouraged to keep living out our faith and living for the Lord. When we are working in the will of the Lord what we do is not in vain, but for a purpose.
34. Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
We have confidence that the Lord is our salvation and He is our light, therefore there is no one we need to fear. We know that God is upholding our life, so we do not need to be afraid.
35. James 1:2-4
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
When we face trials, we as Christians have hope. We know that God is working in us. The trials will help us grow our faith and trust in Jesus resulting in a rich relationship with him.
36. Ecclesiastes 3:1-3
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
Life is hard and when we became Christians that did not exclude us from the trials and hardships of life but gave us an unending hope. In time we see growth and decay, things being built-up and being destroyed but we have confidence in the work God is doing in our lives.
37. Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
There is a lot of brokenness around us right now in the world, but as Christians, we have an amazing hope of the new heaven and new earth. God is our comfort who will wipe away every tear.
38. Romans 8:38-39
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God is with us, and reading the list in this verse confirms that God is with us and nothing can separate us. It is a great comfort to Christians knowing nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.
39. 2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
In our weakness, we know that is where God is working. When we are broken down, God is shining through our brokenness, so we can know in our weakness God is at work.
40. Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
When things are going crazy around us we know that our help is from God, and simply looking at his creation reminds us of his great love for us.
41. Psalm 34:8
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
The Lord is good, when we take refuge in him it is so sweet. The Lord cares for us and loves us.
42. 2 Corithians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Who we were in the past, is in the past. When we became followers of Jesus we became new creations, and we can be certain that we are not who we once were.
43. Nahum 1:7
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
In this verse we are comforted knowing that God is good. In the day of trouble we know that we can take refuge in him. Even better the Lord knows those who take refuge in him, we have a relationship with him, and he knows us.
44. Luke 12:6-7
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
God cares for even the little creatures, he cares for the sparrows. If God cares for each sparrow then he most certainly cares for us. We are valued in God’s eyes, and we can take comfort in this fact.
45. Ephesians 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
When we face trials in life we can be encouraged because the strength we need comes through Jesus. We do not need to come against the devil and his schemes in our own strength but in God’s.
46. Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ
When becoming a Christians you become a part of the family of God, and a citizen of Heaven knowing that is where we belong.
47. Colossians 1:13-14
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
It is amazing the transformation that we go through when we become Christians. It is such an encouragement knowing we have forgiveness and redemption because of what Jesus did on the cross.
48. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
Today we can have confidence that the Lord is with us and guarding us.
49. Hebrews 4:15-16
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
When Jesus was on earth he faced the trials and temptation that we face, and because of this he can sympathize with us and help us but is still without sin.
50. Exodus 34:6
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
When we know the character of God we can have confidence that he will be merciful and gracious to us.
51. 2 Timothy 1:7
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
God has not equipped us with fear. We can be encouraged that God gives us the spirit of power, love and self-control.
52. Psalm 112:7
He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
Despite the many trials of life we can have confidence in life that God is working.
53. Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
It is so encouraging to hear that we do not need to be extra special to see God work, but simply faith the size of a mustard seed.
54. Galatians 6:9
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
This verse cheers me up knowing that as I try to live for God’s glory and according to his word, that it is not for nothing.
55. Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
God has a plan for us. He has good works that he has already prepared us for.
56. Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
As a Christian it is important to remember that because of Jesus’ death on the cross our sins are forgiven and we are free from condemnation.
57. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
When we are going through hard times, God will comfort us. And because of his comfort to us we will then be able to comfort others.
58. Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Not only do we get encouragement straight from the Bible, but we should be in community with other believers.
59. 1 John 3:1
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
We are children of God, and we are loved by God. The world may not understand it but that is because they do not understand him.
60. 1 John 5:4
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
As born-again Christians we overcome the world through our faith in Jesus.
