Astrology has been around for centuries. Astrology and Zodiac signs have become increasingly popular in today’s modern world. This blog explains what I learned while researching should Christians believe in zodiac signs.
Should Christians believe in zodiac signs? No, Christians should not believe in zodiac signs. Those who did practice astrology in the Old Testemant were put to shame. In the New Testament, Paul also refers to the practicing of astrology as something that needs to be cast out and repented of.
But what if you’re not a full-on fortune-teller or astrologists yourself? Is still wrong to believe in your Zodiac sign and the signs of your family and friends?
What Are Zodiac Signs? (The History Explained).
Astrology is an ancient Babylonian practice that has been around for centuries.
Now, when and where did zodiac signs first originate? And what is the definition of the zodiac?
The word “zodiac” comes from the Greek, from a term for “sculpted animal figure,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary. The order in which the signs are usually listed comes from that period too.
According to Webster’s dictionary, the zodiac is “a belt of the heavens within about 8° either side of the ecliptic, including all apparent positions of the sun, moon, and most familiar planets.
It is divided into twelve equal divisions or signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces).
Before the Greeks, the Babylonians had first divided the zodiac into 12 signs by 1500 BC. They had similar constellation names to the names of today, such as the Great Twins, the Lion, and the Scales. Later they incorporated it into Greek divination.
It was during the Ancient Greek period that the 12-star signs of the zodiac were more settled.
The 12 zodiac signs were “named after constellations and matched with dates based on the apparent relationship between their placement in the sky and the sun.
Of more modern days, the astronomer Ptolemy helped popularize the 12 zodiac signs through writing a book on the history of Western astrology.
During the time of Ancient Greek, the first day of spring started when the sun appeared in the constellation Aries. Then everything was marked from that time forward around the circuit of the year (Odenwald).
Astrologists believe that an understanding of the influence of planets and stars allows them to predict and affect the destinies of individuals, groups, and nations.
Zodiac signs are considered apart of astrology, which is a type of divination that involves “the forecasting of earthly and human events through the observation and interpretation of stars.”
Divination is the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means.
Astrology uses the 12 Zodiac signs and each sign has its own “strengths and weaknesses, its own specific traits, desires, and attitude towards life and people.”
Astrologists analyze this projection of the position of planets and the Sun and the Moon on the Ecliptic at the moment of birth.
Should Christians Believe In Zodiac Signs?
Believing in Zodiac signs would be agreeing with astrologists’ interpretation of stars for your personality and future. This goes against seeing what God’s will is for yourself in this world.
Because Zodiac signs are a part of astrology, (not to be confused with astronomy, which is the scientific study of the universe) and the Bible says that astrology (which is based on a person’s interpretation and meaning of what they read into while they observe), is considered evil, we know it displeases God.
What The Bible Says About Astrology & Zodiac Signs
The Bible says that we should not get even close to evil, but flee from any form of evil.
Abstain from every form of evil.1 Thessalonians 5:22
We are to hate the acts of evil, and hold onto what is good.
Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.Romans 12:9
As Christians, we must be careful to not call what is evil good. We must recognize that if something is on the fence with your thoughts towards whether or not something is good or evil, you must research Scripture & God’s revealed will yourself.
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your Word.Psalms 119:9
The more you read Scripture yourself, the more you can understand God’s heart for his people. As Christians, we are called out of the darkness and into the light.
God wants to use us for his glory and in understanding his will for humanity, we can see the danger in calling what is evil good.
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!Isaiah 5:20
Believing what is evil, is taken seriously by God. Instead we are to:
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.Psalm 34:14
Is Participating In Zodiac Signs A Sin?
In Scripture, God commanded the Israelites to reject all the Canaanite practices of divination (which included astrology), fortune-telling, and sorcery. These practices were considered an abomination to the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:9-12).
In Jeremiah it talks of a false prophet who practiced divination .
And the Lord said to me: ‘The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them.’ They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.Jeremiah 14:14
In the book of Daniel we see that the astrologists and sorceries were put to shame and failed to interpret the King’s dream.
Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation.Daniel 4:7
In Acts, we see a servant girl who was possessed by the Spirit of divination (Acts 16:16-24). Paul cast this demonic spirit out of her. She was practicing fortune-telling and had brought her owners much money through that. Demons were giving her insight to supernatural insight into the lives of others.
The Israelites and believers in the New Testament church struggled with some of these things as well. Paul told the church to get rid of anything that had to do with these “divulging practices.”
Many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.
They confessed their sins and burned all of their those items. And God was able to continue his work through them.
Participating in the belief of Zodiac signs is participating in astrology which throughout all of Scripture, the Bible condemns and God considers evil.
Believing in zodiac signs is not wise.
God Doesn’t Want You To Believe in Zodiac Signs
Maybe you don’t feel like you are a full-on astrologist yourself, and have always thought believing in Zodiac signs seemed harmless.
Why would God not want you to believe in your sign?
God is clear in Scripture how he feels about us seeking guidance, direction, or clarity from anything that is not Biblical. When we believe in Zodiac signs we are believing in the Astrologist’s interpretation (not God’s) of how the alignment of the stars affects our personality or future.
This can create opportunities for the evil spiritual forces to come in.
I listened to a few interviews by those who were previously astrologists themselves. They now have turned Christian and talk about the importance of staying away from any form of evil.
What may seem harmless, can actually cause more harm than good.
God is clear that we should not seek out these things, but seek Him for the understanding of humanity, and God’s will for us.
Why It Matters
When believing in your Zodiac sign and those of others, you can begin to make excuses for sins that one can label as a “personality” thing. When in fact, it is a sin issue.
As Christians, we can know that we are born-again believers, a new creation, and we are to not go back to the ways of our former lives, but continuously seek God in our new life with him.
I know for me, the reason I wanted to research my zodiac sign was that I wanted to see if it actually lined up with who I am. I wanted to understand myself more and also understand others more.
Others desire to know people’s signs to see if their relationships are compatible with each other. To me, it felt like a personality test, and I love putting myself in other people’s shoes, feeling like I knew why they acted the way they did.
As humans, we do want to understand ourselves and each other more. We want to find reasoning as to why that person may have acted that way, or why we get along better with certain people, and what our future might look like.
Humans are intelligent beings who don’t want to settle with just assuming things, we want to know how life and the world work around us.
Many times we are anxious about ourselves, each other, our own insecurities, and what’s going to happen in this world. People want to understand the bigger picture of things.
However, the enemy wants you to become so obsessed with yourself and your sign that you lose track of your goal as a Christian.
As Christians, we must be careful when seeking to venture into any spiritual realm that is not directly seeking God himself. Believing in your Zodiac sign may not be right away “venturing into another spiritual realm” right then. Since it’s a part of astrology, it is still considered wrong in God’s eyes.
When we believe in what God considers evil, or open our hearts to having others seek the spiritual realm for us, this can open doors to numerous influences that you might not even know of at first.
Also when believing in your zodiac sign, people are filtering what they are believing through what they want to hear. If you look for something long enough, you’ll see it. Selective attention and selective memory is a real thing.
You will see something when you are paying attention to it. One will remember what was said if/when it happens.
For example, there may be 10 things on the list of what a Capricorn may be like. Maybe right off the bat, you relate to a few of those. Then the more you study into your Zodiac sign, the more likely you will start to become like it.
It can be a similar thing for going to an Astrologist who reads into your future. They will mention a bunch of things that could happen in your future, and you might only remember the things that actually do happen.
You won’t remember the things they said that didn’t come true, only the things that did.
When we go against God, we are trying to do something in our own strength, and when God clearly says not to, we can expect to face consequences.
A former Astrologer says once you start going down this road of messing with astrology, it can be very enticing because people like to know about themselves.
They start making that part of their worldview wanting to go deeper into other areas related to that. It can be contrary to what Christ wants us to seek.
I would encourage you to listen to this interview by a former astrologist who did horoscope readings as her occupation. She is now a born-again believer and explained in her interviews what went on in her experiences.
She was way more heavily involved in astrology and in ancient, Satanic arts. What she says we need to realize is there is a supernatural power working behind this.
There are spiritual powers working behind this system in the world. We are not fighting against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers.
In some cases astrological readings will be accurate to your personality however, it is witchcraft. There is a supernatural element here where the enemy wants to put out in a little bit of truth about themselves, this discovery of self is actually a satanic pursuit, to begin with.
Horoscopes and astrology are often involved in looking to “powers” or “influences” that define fates and tells the future.
She said that many who do horoscope readings are in touch with spirits, but these aren’t “good spirits” as they might claim, they are demons from the enemy.
If we attempt to use God’s creation (the stars and planets) for the purpose of trying to figure out ourselves, that is going against what God has originally created it for, which is supposed to bring glory to Him.
Why God Would Not Want Us to Believe in Zodiac Signs
God created us to have passions and a purpose. He wants to give us answers to life’s questions. Not from the heavens, stars, planets, or people’s interpretation of them, but from Him directly.
We can see God’s invisible attributes made known through His creation (Romans 1). But it is not for us to interpret ourselves or our futures with. God strictly forbids worshiping the heavens and predicting future events.
The ex-astrologist turned Christian said when she first began her journey of being involved with astrology, Zodiac signs, readings, and predicting the future, she saw and interacted with an evil-looking spirit.
But she rationalized it saying that she herself doesn’t have the eyes yet to really see the goodness or beauty of it. She started believing that as she advanced, it would be less scary.
These are channeled materials she says, that in her mind she thought were good as time went on. But in fact, were quite frightening, and later realized were demonic, and she was serving Satan.
Another testimony I found of someone involved with the New Age Movement, shares his experience of being led by Spirit Guides who were demonic.
For him it started with what might seem like harmless things, practicing yoga and meditation, and reading books by New Age gurus. He started to resonate with what the New Age describes as indigo.
He started to resonate with this because he saw similarities in himself with this description. He got involved in a type of serpent yoga that can be awoken “enlightening you claiming everything including yourself is God.”
When one is involved in this he said, you begin to be deceived having a distorted, false view of God.
He explained how in the Bible, Satan disguised himself as good, claiming that if Eve ate the fruit God forbade, she would become like God. Fallen angels once served God, but when Satan fell, they went with him. They are unclean Spirits or demons according to the Bible, appearing benevolent.
In 2 Corinthians it says that Satan himself can appear good, in a disguise as an angel of light. God says to not communicate with evil spirits and to not consult those who do.
When consulting with Spiritualists or mediums, you are consulting with those who admit they are working with spirits, and we know from the Bible these aren’t spirits who serve God.
So with all that being said, we can know that there is never a time where you should involve yourself in any form of astrology.
The Bible says we should stay away from any forms of evil because Jesus has so much better for us.
If you are currently getting interested in these things, I would encourage you to stop, and take it to God asking for him to take away any evil thing in you.
Begin today, seeking God before all else and knowing yourself, your identity is found only through Jesus and Him alone.
